What Is A Filling?
A “filling” can help reduce the discomfort of cavities and prevent further decay by closing off spaces where more bacteria can enter. Such a procedure is a valid route to restoring tooth structure loss. Dental fillings not only treat cavities, but they also treat worn-down, cracked, or broken teeth. Types Of Fillings
There are generally four different types of fillings. They are:- Gold
- Porcelain
- Silver Amalgam
- Composite Resin
GOLD
Gold fillings consist of a gold alloy (mixture gold & other metals). The primary use for this filling is in Inlays & Onlays for crowns. Gold fillings can last for 15 years or longer. The great benefit that this filling brings is that it doesn’t corrode. Gold fillings are also solid and durable. They can handle the strong chewing forces that come from eating.
PORCELAIN
Porcelain fillings are very versatile. They’re used often for inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns, implants, and ortho brackets. A great benefit of this filling is that theyore tooth-colored and stain-resistant. Expect porcelain fillings to last several years or more.
SILVER AMALGAM
Silver amalgam fillings consist of a mixture of silver, zinc, copper, tin, and mercury. Amalgam filling’s primary usage is for back teeth fillings. The fillings themselves can last ten years or more.
Silver fillings are quite strong, able to withstand the strong chewing forces. They’re also less costly than the other filling types listed here. The drawback is that amalgam fillings are not tooth-colored and can corrode over time.
COMPOSITE RESIN
Composite resin fillings are made from a mixture of plastic and glass particles. They’re useful for both small and large fillings, especially in the front teeth areas. Resin fillings are great in the visible areas of the tooth and also for inlays. These fillings can last at least five years. They can be costlier since it takes more time for a dentist to apply them.
