Periodontal (Gum) Disease

At Shodhan Dentistry in Desert Hot Springs, Dr. Harin Shodhan and Dr. Keyur Shodhan frequently treat patients who have a form of gum disease, from mild (gingivitis) to severe(periodontitis). Gingivitis does not cause pain, so it can easily be overlooked. Unfortunately, if you do have gingivitis and do not receive proper treatment in its early stages, gingivitis can turn into periodontitis -- a more serious gum disease. The main cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene. Therefore, it is very important to visit the dentist regularly and stay committed to a consistent routine of brushing and flossing at home.

It is not guaranteed that you will develop gum disease if your parents, or their parents, had a degree of it. On the other hand, there is an increased risk among individuals with parents who may have lost all or most of their teeth due to periodontal disease. Tobacco users are also at a higher risk of getting gum disease.

You may have gingivitis if you have:

  • Gums that become red, swollen, and tender brushing your teeth
  • Gums that have receded or pulled away from your teeth, causing your teeth to appear elongated
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth

You may have periodontitis if you have the above signs of gingivitis, as well as:

  • Teeth that are loose or separating
  • Pus between the teeth and gums
  • A change in alignment

Although periodontal disease is one of the most common problems facing patients, it is preventable and treatable. At Shodhan Dentistry, which is within close distance to Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and Coachella Valley, our general dentistry professionals can help improve your oral health through individualized treatment plans. Dr. Harin Shodhan or Dr. Keyur Shodhan will determine the best solution for your particular condition, and help you understand that gum disease can be prevented.
