Dental Crowns
At Shodhan Dentistry in Desert Hot Springs, “dental crowns” are a common request. Many patients who would like to reshape, resize, and restrengthen one or more of their teeth.
What’s A Crown?
A dental crown, also known as a “cap,” will significantly improve a tooth’s appearance. The crown will function as a protective cover. It will cover the entire visible part of the tooth, starting at the base of the gum line. Patients who choose to have a crown often opt for a tooth-colored one to blend in with the rest of the teeth.

Crowns can consist of many material types. Common types are all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all ceramic material. If you want to keep the most natural look possible, we don’t recommend all-metal crowns, as they stand out. Dr. Keyur Shodhan recommends using porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or an all-ceramic crown. These material choices provide a natural aesthetic look. A tooth-colored crown may also be best if you’re allergic to metal.
What Are The Benefits Of A Crown?
Dental crowns provide excellent solutions for many dental problems. Common issues crowns can help fix are;- To protect a weak tooth from breaking
- To hold parts of a cracked tooth together
- To restore a severely worn-down or broken tooth
- To conceal a severely discolored or misshapen tooth
- To cover and provide support for a tooth that has a large filling with minimal tooth left
- To hold/secure a dental bridge in place
- To cover a dental implant
- Protect a root canal.
The Dental Crown Procedure
Receiving a dental crown typically takes two visits. The first visit involves tooth prep. Dr. Shodhan will remove any decay and reshape your tooth surface. Next, we will take tooth impressions in preparation for the custom crown. At the end of the first visit, Dr. Shodhan will place a temporary crown while waiting for the permanent one.
The second visit, Dr. Shodhan, will replace the temporary crown with the permanent one. He’ll ensure there’s proper bite and spacing.
Will My Insurance Cover A Crown?
Most insurances do provide dental crown coverage. When crowns are medically necessary, insurances will cover a percentage of the costs. If crowns are for cosmetic reasons, there’s good chance insurance will not cover them.
