What Causes Teeth To Turn Yellow?

As time passes, our teeth absorb certain types of staining agents. These teeth stainers will turn your teeth yellow over some time. Some common culprits of teeth yellowing are tea, coffee, cola, and red wine. Also, tobacco use can contribute to yellowing as well. Aging is another factor too. As you get older, the enamel grows thinner and more transparent. They are resulting in the tooth showing the darker, inner layers.

Our In-Office Teeth Whitening

At Shodhan Dentistry, we provide effective whitening solutions. Our cosmetic dentist specializes in Zoom!® Teeth Whitening. It’s an in-Office Whitening System that takes about an hour to complete. Zoom Whitening will help you look better and feel better about the color of your teeth.

Our in-office whitening uses more potent cleaning agents compared to take-home kits. Over the counter and take-home kits need at least a few uses to produce whitening results. With Zoom, you will walk out the same day with a fantastic looking smile.

Who Is A Teeth Whitening Candidate?

In general, most patients are good candidates for Zoom whitening. If you have any of the following though, you may not qualify as a candidate for teeth whitening:
  • Age and pregnancy issues
  • Sensitive teeth and allergies to products
  • Gum disease
  • Worn enamel
  • Cavities
  • Exposed roots
  • Fillings
  • Dental crowns

How Long Does The Whitening Last?

On average, expect your teeth whitening to last around six months, if you take good care of your teeth by following good daily hygiene. If you practice poor health and drink 5 cups of coffee a day, your whitening won’t make it to six months. Conversely, if you make small diet changes such as cutting out coffee or alcohol, your whitening can last more than six months.

Will Whitening Affect Veneers And Crowns?

Receiving whitening treatments is a conservative dental treatment. So there will be no harm if you have pre-existing dental restorations like crowns or veneers. Dental restorations consist of solid materials. The bleaching agents in teeth whitening won’t affect them.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

With it’s conservative nature, teeth whitening is very safe. A small percentage of patients might experience increased teeth sensitivity. To decrease the change of any harmful side effects, our dentist will conduct a thorough exam.

During your consultation with Dr. Shodhan, he will layout a treatment plan that’s best for you. One option can even be at-home teeth whitening. We know that every person has unique dentalThusds. Thus, we strive to provide you with more than one teeth whitening option. We are proud to accommodate you and provide you with the treatment that will benefit you the most.

Frequently Asked questions

The cost of professional teeth whitening ranges from $500 to $1000, depending on the severity of your tooth discoloration. Procedures that involve additional laser tools are typically more expensive, ranging from $1000 to $1500. At-home whitening kits provided by your dentist cost between $200 and $600, depending on how many kits you need.

As the name suggests, in-office teeth whitening is performed in a dental office, typically in one session, and produces immediate results. At-home whitening is a kit your dentist provides, which you use over several days to gradually achieve the results you want. Both procedures are safe and effective, but at-home whitening might be more comfortable for people with sensitive teeth, as the whitening solution is typically less concentrated than that used in in-office procedures. Professional at-home whitening are not the same as over-the-counter or DIY solutions.

Professional teeth whitening can make your teeth up to 8 shades whiter. However, the results you get may depend on your teeth’s original color, the types of stains you have, and your oral health. While professional teeth whitening is typically safe, patients with weaker enamel or conditions such as gum disease may be recommended a more gentle whitening procedure to preserve the health of their teeth and avoid tooth sensitivity.

Professional teeth whitening can cause temporary tooth sensitivity. Whitening solutions typically contain bleaching agents, such as hydrogen peroxide, that temporarily make your enamel more porous, allowing the dark pigment in its deeper layers to be removed. As a result, you are likely to experience sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages for about a week after teeth whitening. As your teeth heal after the procedure, the sensitivity goes away.

An in-office teeth whitening treatment typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. The total length of your procedure will depend on the type of solution and additional tools (such as laser) used, the severity of tooth discoloration and staining, and the results you want to achieve. At-home professional teeth whitening typically takes 7 to 14 days, with some methods taking up to a month to achieve the full benefits.

We can offer same-day teeth whitening, provided one of our cosmetic dentists has an available appointment time. Do not hesitate to call our office, and we will do our best to schedule your teeth whitening procedure as soon as possible.

Professional teeth whitening is incomparably better than over-the-counter products for several reasons:

  • Professional solutions offer more predictable, noticeable results than over-the-counter products.
  • Professional teeth whitening is custom-made with your specific goals and needs in mind.
  • Professional whitening is much safer for your teeth and gums, as your dentist examines your oral health before choosing a solution that will not harm it.
  • Over-the-counter solutions can cause irreparable damage to your enamel and gums, and cause permanent tooth sensitivity and even more severe discoloration.

We recommend repeating teeth whitening no more than once or twice per year, depending on your oral health and enamel strength. You should wait at least 6 months between whitening procedures. Patients with sensitive teeth and gums or weak enamel may be advised to have larger gaps between sessions.

Very friendly and attentive staff, and most importantly, they take you in at your scheduled time. The doctors are friendly and work well with children. The office is very clean and seems organized as well. I would definitely recommend them!
